At the end of it all, none of it feels believable. The cringy, verbose manner of storytelling and the bizarre and ultimately unmemorable names of people and places really irritate me as well. I couldn't possibly care any less about the story, and the combat is so mundane it makes me want to turn the game off early into every play session. A friend got me into this game and I have tried so hard to like it, but I don't. I know this post is a year old but I wanted to chime in here because I feel you. So to sum it up, some story moments (the Ishgardians/Dragons history reveal, Light coming back to the sky when it looked like you brought the night back) and some of the trials (Susano, Titania and the SHB main storyline endboss) were very good but most of the time I spent levelling in FFXIV was definitely wasted to me. Quit around Eden release since the PvE progression was boring the shit out of me.

Then I finished storyline, did Twinning, Academy and Amaurot which were pretty fun - once or twice, then they turned into boring chore since there is no way to customise the dungeon experience or make it more difficult. Shadowbringers was good as expected, the class design (bard) actually kind of came together and was enjoyable, even though the weird server ticks kind of ruined that a bit, stuff like using Iron Jaws to refresh dots which on my UI already fell off the target but server apparently didn't get the memo yet. There were some bright moments like Susanoo fight, but the whole experience was once again slog. Stormblood got super boring again, I could not possibly care any less about the rebellion or Lyse. Heavensward was solid, I was decently invested in the story since I like high fantasy. Doesn't help that gameplay during this part boils down to pressing roughly two buttons with gcd that lasts years. I WILL IGNORE YOU IF YOU DON'T.ĪRR, especially the lvl 50 pre-HSW quests, was probably the most boring levelling experience of all the games I've ever played.
